At the end of February 2018 Cyclone Gita caused massive damage back home in both Tonga and parts of Samoa. The devastation was widespread in Tonga particularly, and the Tongan community here was quick to respond.  Within days of the cyclone the Tongan Community Council met and decided to raise funds to send home to families.

The result was a wonderful evening of Pasifika culture, run by the Tongan Community Council and supported by the other Pasifika communities of Nelson, including our Maori and Palagi fanau.

This is the first time in many years that a community event has been so inclusive. Over $7,000 dollars was raised for families back in Tonga, and the Tongan Community Council were able to add another successful project to their growing list of achievements.
